Dreams Onyx

My Complete Review of Dreams Onyx Punta Cana All-Inclusive Resort

Estimated Read Time: 10 Minutes

Me and my family decided to spend 2 nights at Dreams Onyx in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. This resort is now apart of the Hyatt brand. We booked a swim-preferred room and flew into Santiago Airport as we were attending a wedding in Santiago at Camp David Resort which had a breathtaking view and amazing breakfast. We then took a private taxi two days later that drove us to the resort in Punta Cana. The drive from Santiago to Punta Cana was way too long and exhausting that next time I believe we will just book a flight from Santiago to Punta Cana.

Check In: Since we book a Preferred room, check in was in a private lounge type area that had a bar, as well as snacks while we waited for our personal check in concierge to visit us to collect our check in documents and credit card. I felt that although the private bar in the Preferred lounge was nice, I would have much rather checked in at the regular check in desk because I think the check in would have been so much quicker. I felt like they kept us at that check in lounge for almost an hour after already having a long drive there, it wasn’t a pleasant experience for me.

Room: The room I will say was really nice and we had an assortment of fruit waiting for us and wasn’t sure if it was because we had booked a Preferred room. We had a swim up room which was amazing as it had your own jacuzzi bath on the back patio as well as your own private swimmable area that also had bar tenders taking drink orders for you. The room was very spacious and clean and the bathroom was really nice as well. The beds were comfortable and we had a fully stocked mini fridge. I really enjoyed my stay while in the room.

Food: So i have a bit to say about the food at this resort. First I will say my favorite part of staying at all inclusive resorts is trying out all their restaurants, which this wasn’t an option for us at this resort unfortunately. The restaurants at the resort do not accept reservations at all, they are first come first served and after getting in our room and showering and getting dressed, we were starving. All the restaurants had an over 2 hour wait, which I though as booking a Preferred room you would get maybe a quicker table or a personal reservation and that wasn’t the case at all. We were left with eating at the buffet, which was horrible. There was absolutely not much to select from, it was very sad actually. I was so disappointed to not see barely any meat selection besides one small area that had one meat or chicken option to be cooked made to order near the pasta station. The pasta was tasteless with absolutely no flavor nor options to customize the pasta besides the spaghetti noodles and sauce. They had a nice salad bar option which I will say was the only thing that looked appetizing. The desert area was filled with food items that looked stale and old. The Preferred Club restaurant next to the buffet was not open for dinner only during breakfast and lunch. Our saving grace was On a Roll Burger Bar and Coco Cafè. These places were open until 11pm and served amazing burgers and fries and amazing coffee drinks. Sundaez served a one scoop ice cream which took care of the sweet tooth. For breakfast and lunch we were able to eat inside the Preferred Restaurant which ultimately served the same food as the buffet just served to you in a “made to order” fashion instead of buffet style. I can’t speak on any other restaurants the resort had as it was almost impossible to get a table even with a Preferred Club room. I am left to assume that you would need to walk to these restaurants as soon as they open to put your name down and when I tried doing that during lunch time almost no restaurant was open except the Preferred Restaurant.

Pool: The pools at this resort were nice and plentiful. They had pools with swim up bars, they had rooftop pools, they had pools with see through glass, and a lazy river that led to another huge open pool that hosted live performances. Next to the lazy river was also a small waterpark as well.

Beach: The beach at this resort was really nice. The sand was nice and soft and the water was clear and blue. Since my stay was so short, I was not able to spend much time there as I wanted to try and enjoy as much as I could from what the resort had to offer. My family did arrange a dinner on the beach which was really nice and I highly recommend!

Spa: We did squeeze in some time at the Spa which is located between the two resorts: Dreams and Breathless. I highly recommend booking a massage and asking what specials they have. We took advantage of the couple massage special for $199 which included a 50 minute massage and access to the rest of the spa such as the main pool, steam room, ice room, and hot tub. They directed you to each area of the spa and recommend that you arrive to the spa about 45 minutes early to enjoy the spa at its entirety. The also had the fish foot spa which was pretty cool but was an extra charge.

Adults Only Sister Property: This resort is right next to their Adults only Resort called Breathless. I did take a short walk over to the resort but there is also a shuttle that can take you there. They had a DJ playing music by the main pool and it looked like a relaxed vibe at that resort.

Check Out: Check out was a breeze! Nothing much to say about it. You were able to charge things to the room throughout the resort and confirm the charges at check out and use the same card you checked in with.

Nightlife: This resort had a really nice nightlife. They had night time shows and performances near the ice cream and coffee shop. They also had a nightclub set up near the coffee shop at the sister resort Breathless which the shuttle was able to take you to and bring you back. They had an amazing DJ with an open bar and the party was really fun!

Overall Experience: I would recommend trying a different Dreams property due to the food, but if I were to absolutely have to come back to this one, I would plan my time there a bit better to figure out how to eat at all of the restaurants during dinner time as well as keep in mind the schedule of entertainment at this resort to not miss out on anything. I would rate this resort 6/10.
